Artist’s Statement
I tell stories through art because art ignites my spirit, evoking a conversation I want to participate in with my audience through my work. With collage, I pose visual questions and encourage reflection on the shared human experience.
My work brings disparate parts into a new whole, seeking to make sense of the world through creative play. I do this to explore the process; for me, the means justifies the end. An exploration of vintage ephemera and found photos celebrates what wasn’t meant to endure, what has survived and been given new life. Everyday insignificant objects serve as a look into the past through the lens of modern curiosity.
What lives did these objects lead?
Whose hands did they pass through?
What lives did they touch?
I gain new insight from these fragmented inventories of the past. They come to me in a state of disarray, pulling them together shines a light on the commonalities of our lives. In this way the past interacts with us, and we interact with the past. As artist and audience, we explore the similarities in everyday experience through the accoutrement of daily life.
I use collage to encourage reflection and reveal small facets of the universal spirit. I like to explore relationships between story and storyteller, image and viewer, to make new connections. Ultimately, I seek to reframe perspective, and to make sense of the world on both a larger scale and the scale of individual lives and experiences.
